Pray for Trauma Healing Group

With the events in KC these past few days, we sent out another Facebook ad to let people know that we are hosting a trauma healing group starting tomorrow night. We likewise encourage anyone at Summit Point to attend or invite a friend who could benefit from the experience.

God is able to heal our brokenness. Amen?

Day 40 – February 16 - Trauma Healing Groups.
Pray for those who will be taking THG starting tomorrow night. Lord, protect them from the evil one who does not want them to find healing. My God watches over their hearts and allows them to find hope and healing through the powerful work of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

1 Peter 5:8-9 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 So resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brothers and sisters who are in the world.

What a Weak...

This week in KC has been insane, and to be truthful an emotional roller-coaster.

Sunday we start the week as the Super Bowl Champions.

The first of the week was warm and everyone was in high spirits.

Wednesday finally arrived and an estimated 1 Million people turned out for the victory parade and rally at Union Station.

Then triumph turned into tragedy as two foolish teens decided to settle a fight with guns. Minutes later, normal citizens became heroes, yet the aftermath left Lisa Lopez dead, her two children also wounded along with dozens injured. Children, now in the hospital with gun shot wounds. Adults in the ICU at area hospitals.

Many people praise my brothers in blue and the incredible actions of KCFD responding quickly to the incident. I listened almost immediately to the scanner as the crews were transporting the injured to area hospitals.

As our week draws to a close, cold and snow descend upon our once bright and joyous city. Seems poetic that the weather matches the feelings of so many.

Friends, there is a glimmer of hope in this mess as over 200,000 has been raised in a GoFundMe account (partly from a $100,000 donation by Taylor Swift). The city is rallying again around the hurting, not just those who were at the event. Maybe our city leaders will finally do something about the violence in our metro.

I have maintained these last few days that the hope for KC and to stop violence is found only in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We launched a prayer line on Social Media for people in KC to IM, email or call the church for prayer or to talk. We are in partnership with fell pastors in KC who are standing together for the hope of KC.

Let me take us back to the example of Jesus in Matthew 26:36-39.

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

In Jesus' greatest trial, He sought the Father. In the deep anguish of His pain, Jesus prayed. Even amid suffering, Jesus went to the Father in prayer. How much more His children should seek the Father's face in a time like this.

Today, please pray with me for the Father to give peace. Hope to the hopeless, comfort the children, and unite the church. May the body of Christ be salt and Light to the hurting of KC. May the Gospel change the hearts of the youth and draw the lost from the darkness into the beautiful light of Jesus. 

Finally, pray for the two boys and their families who brought this pain. We must remember that they are also sinners needing a great savior.

Praying for Restoration

When reading the pastoral words of James, he gives a diagnosis and cure. The person who is suffering can be cured through the power of prayer. Likewise, if you are cheerful or in good spirits, praise God for his blessings.

It should be noted that the word James uses for suffering is not related to physical illness, but the suffering caused by others who are inflicting the pain. Many people can be confused as the English text then tells the Christian to call the Elders if they are ill. While the word used could mean ill (sick) it is also used fourteen times to refer to emotional or spiritual weakness, according to John MacArthur. 

I love what he says in his commentary on this text "The weak are those who have been defeated in the spiritual battle, who have lost the ability to endure their suffering. They are the fallen spiritual warriors, the exhausted, weary, depressed, defeated Christians. They have tried to draw on God’s power through prayer, but have lost motivation, even falling into sinful attitudes. Having hit bottom, they are not able to pray effectively on their own. In that condition, the spiritually weak need the help of the spiritually strong."1

James connects this weakness to the Spiritual leaders of the church who pray and anoint to give strength. The prayers of a righteous person have the power to make you strong. The story of Elijah has to do with God pouring out his refreshing spirit upon the weary and drought-stricken believer.

MacArthur notes, "But the picture of rain pouring down on parched ground perfectly illustrates God’s outpouring of spiritual blessings on the dry and parched souls of struggling believers. And He does both in response to the righteous prayers of godly people."

We are going to have conflict and suffering at the hands of other people. We will grow weary of dealing with other people who are selfish, hateful, mean, and hurtful. In this time of suffering, we are told to call out for help. 

I know many of you have suffered pain at other people's hands, and you have grown weary from the fight. I pray for God's power and strength in your life. I likewise pray for your struggles physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

February 15 - James 5:13-18
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

A Disciple’s Renewal

 

Happy Valentine's Day and Victory Wednesday. #GoChiefs

I can relate to today's prayer from The Valley of Vision. I have asked God for billboards because I have trouble discerning his will. I, too, am slow to learn, hardheaded to follow, prone to forget, and a sinful human to blame it on my ADHD.

Yet, we have the opportunity every day to change our habits. We have the opportunity to redeem the wasted time and poor discipleship habits. We, too, can have powerful faith in Jesus...

February 14 - A Disciple’s Renewal (The Valley of Vision)

O MY SAVIOUR, Help me. I am so slow to learn, so prone to forget, so weak to climb; I am in the foothills when I should be on the heights; I am pained by my graceless heart,
my prayerless days,
my poverty of love,
my sloth in the heavenly race,
my sullied conscience,
my wasted hours,
my unspent opportunities.

I am blind while light shines around me: take the scales from my eyes, grind to dust the evil heart of unbelief. Make it my chief joy to study thee, meditate on thee, gaze on thee, sit like Mary at thy feet, lean like John on thy breast, appeal like Peter to thy love, count like Paul all things dung.
